A disconnect knife switch is a manually operated electrical device designed to create a physical break (visible isolation) in a circuit to ensure safety during maintenance. These switches are generally built for industrial, commercial, and residential applications requiring infrequent switching, such as solar panels, motor circuits, and power distribution systems.

Voltage Rating: Typically rated for 240Vac, 480Vac, or 600Vac in industrial settings. Common small-scale or residential knife switches are rated for 0-380V or 220V.

Short-Circuit Current Rating (SCCR): Standard switches often have an SCCR of 10,000 rms symmetrical amperes. With Class R or J fuses, this can be increased to 100,000 or 200,000 rms amperes.

Horsepower Rated: Most heavy-duty disconnects are horsepower rated, often up to 200 hp at 240 Vac or 500 hp at 480/600 Vac.

Configuration: Commonly available in 2-pole (DPST/DPDT) or 3-pole (TPST/TPDT) and 4-pole (TPST/TPDT) configurations.
